Description: Rosso Levanto Turco marble is a red-brown serpentinite breccia of Mesozoic age with white calcite veins. This stone internationally may be nominated as a marble but in the area of application of the European Standard this stone must be nominated as serpentinite.
A small sample of Rosso Levanto Turco marble is not representative owing to a wide variation in colour and veining. Swatch samples must be approved for large projects to ensure that the blocks are all extracted from the same quarry face for matching purposes. Rosso Levanto Turco marble is not frost, acid or salt resistant, ideal for both interior use but the polish is only constant inside.
Mineral Composition: Average by %:
Marble: Is a metamorphosed limestone, composed of very pure calcium carbonate, CaCO3. The softness of marble and its relative isotropy and homogeneity make marble very desirable for sculpture and building stone. Although marble comes from limestone, the temperatures and pressures necessary to form marble usually destroy any fossils that may have been present in the limestone.
Serpentine: Serpentine is any of a group of hydrous magnesium-rich silicate minerals. The composition of these common rock-forming minerals approximates Mg3Si2O5(OH)4. Serpentinite is a rock composed of one or more serpentine group minerals. Minerals in this group are formed by serpentinization, a hydration and metamorphic transformation of ultramafic rock from the Earth's mantle.
